Situated in Los Angeles’ Chinatown, the main focus of this project was to create a space for two distinct programs to co-exist: a dance studio and a market. This structure originated from a hinging movement, initially constructed of curves and then combined with linear and angled elements. A form which was once regarded as simple and elegant had evolved to a form with purposeful disruptions involving curvatures against angled aspects through rotating, doubling, and experimenting with different orientations. At first, the form maintained a constant positive slope, but the most fascinating view was when the form had constant changes of elevation present.
The curvatures within the form provide different experiences for the two programs. Open curvatures in the market allow for a more public encounter whereas the curvatures with angled walls communicate a more private and closed off experience while still maintaining its ability for public access.
